Over the years Schaller Automation has created and supplied the world with a range of different generations of Visatron models. Below you will find some additional Visatron models that have not been mentioned in previous posts. One current generation, the Visatron VN/93 generation, and one model that is now out of production, the Visatron VN/87 EMC. These are the models that had a great impact on Schaller Automations standing in the industry.

Visatron VN/93

The Visatron VN/93 generation consist of: VN 115/93, VN 116/93 & VN 215/93. The VN/93 generation did not replace any of our other oil mist detector generations but was a supplement to the other systems. The VN/93 generation was launched into the market in 1997 and production line stopped in 2019. It is easy to identify the VN/93 generation as this is the only oil mist detector by Schaller Automation that was not in a grey, metallic colour, but white.

VN 115/93 during a high oil mist concentration alarm is indicating that there is oil mist concentration inside the engine. VN 116/93 indicates which side of the installation the oil mist concentration is located in the engine. VN 215/93 indicates which compartment of the engine the high oil mist concentration is located in.

Visatron VN/87 EMC

The Visatron VN/87 EMC generation consist of: VN 115/87 EMC, VN 116/87 EMC & VN 215/87 EMC. The VN/87 EMC is the successor of the VN/79 & VN/82 generations. The VN/87 was placed into the market in 1985 and was in production until the system was replaced by the VN/87 EMC in 1998. The VN/87 EMC was then replaced by the VN/87plus in 2008. The VN 115/87 EMC was mainly used for the 4-stroke engine market and the system requires a single tube installation. The VN 166/87 EMC & VN 215/87 EMC was mainly used for the 2-stroke engine market. The VN/87 generation have during its time been modified several times.

For Schaller & Engine Protection Partner, “safety first” is not just an empty phrase or marketing slogan, it has been part and parcel of our corporate culture and practiced every day for more than 60 years. The VN301plus is based on 50 years experience in oil mist detection. In order to respond to today’s market demands, we at Schaller & Engine Protection Partner have to put considerable thought into how we could make our product even safer and simpler.

Visatron VN301plus Central unit

The central unit of the VN301plus system has the following functions:

Disturbing power supply to the sensors

Providing the operator with necessary information on system status

Programming and adjustment

The central unit is designs to withstand extreme conditions such as vibrations or high temperature at the engine. All important information is available at a glance. Up to 10 sensor can be connected to the central unit, and up to 20 as master slave version. Our new software makes it possible to calibrate the sensors so they are always perfectly adjusted to the engine operating conditions. Our tried and tested “floating zero algorithm” adapts to the opacity in the crankcase arising from the operation conditions and therefore prevents false alarms. The Remote Indicator II can be connected as an option. The central unit can communicate with modern control systems via ModBus or CANbus. All data in the system is stored in the central unit for analysis.

VN301plus Sensor

The sensor consist of 3 parts:

Engine wall screw fitting

Sensor

Hybrid cable

Flexibility, simplicity and reliability – this is how we control your operating cost more effectively! The engine wall screw fitting allows the sensor to be mounted on the engine and also the intake and return of the crankcase atmosphere. The engine wall screw fitting with is flexible intake funnel is mounted from the outside. Its form prevents splash oil from being drawn in and a false alarm being triggered. We can offer you s suitable engine wall screw fitting to match the engine wall thickness. Schaller has developed a sensor based on the Venturi principle that reduces spare parts and maintenance. It has been redesigned in order to also to achieve a significant reduction in air consumption. Keeping you operating cost under control.

The sensor is connected to the central unit using our hybrid cable. The cable supplies compressed air and power to the sensor and facilitates exchange of data with the central unit.

Visatron VN301plus Cable

Our hybrid cable solution offers flexible installation options and, as always , offers the benefits of our technology which is based on the Venturi principle. And what’s more, there are no wear parts or time- consuming repairs. We use fresh air to keep our sensors completely clear of dirt. This reduces maintenance overheads significantly and rules out false alarms. The no-frills display of our central unit means you quickly gain an overview of the system status. Our products are geared towards Industry 4.0 due to our CAN and Modbus interface options.

Service and maintenance is a key factor to have a completely functional and operational Visatron Oil Mist Detector system. Some parts on the systems are parts that will wear down over time and must be replaced before it is rendered ineffective. Not replacing such parts may lead to the system not being able to detect high oil mist concentration or complete shutdown of the oil mist detector system. Cleaning the system is also an important part of maintenance. Keep your pipe system and baseplate clean. Each series of Visatron Oil Mist Detectors have their own schedule for when specific maintenance steps should be performed. You can find your OMD maintenance and service schedule and step-by-step guide here!

Maintenance kits for your Visatron system

We at Engine Protection Partner AS have for years made custom maintenance kits for all currently used systems. All kits are made of original Schaller Automation parts and are tailored for the relevant maintenance. This means you will not pay more for unnecessary parts you don’t need. There are some kits that are design for general usage across models and some for specific models. Most of the general kits we offer are test kits to ensure your system is working optimal. We have published step-by-step guides for these as well, you can find them here!

Service for your Visatron OMD

Some maintenance steps require authorized service personnel to examine your system. Depending on you which Visatron OMD model you have on your system this step is only required every 24 months or 16000 operating hours. We offer authorized service on-site and our authorized repair department always have available exchange units when the time comes to replace the Oil Mist Detector. Please contact us if you require maintenance parts or you need to service your system. Lists of the different Engine Protection Partner maintenance kits and Schaller Automation service kits can be found here!

The Visatron VN/87 Generation

The Schaller Automation Visatron VN/87plus generation consist of: VN 115/87plus, VN 116/87plus & VN 215/87plus. The VN87plus is the successor of the VN/87 EMC. The VN/87plus was placed into the market in 2008. It was in production until the system was replaced by VN2020 and VN301plus in 2020. The VN/87plus was mainly used for 4-stroke engine market, and the system requires a single tube installation. The VN 116/87plus and VN 215/87plus was mainly used for the 2-stroke engine market. The VN 215/87plus indicates during a high oil mist concentration alarm which compartment the oil mist is coming from. The VN 116/87plus indicates from what side, the oil mist concentration is coming from. The VN 115/87plus is during a high oil mist concentration alarm, indicates that there is oil mist concentration in engine. The VN 115/87plus does this without any compartment location of the oil mist.

VN 115/87plus

The VN 115 and VN 116 series use a header-suction-tube system for this purpose. The oil mist detector is positioned in the middle between two header-suction-tube sections located on the engine sides. From these sections, single-suction tubes branch off near the compartments. These tubes are considerably thinner than the header-suction-tubes and they have a throttling effect. Owing to the large header-suction-tube diameter the vacuum and consequently the sample flow at each suction point remain virtually constant. The arrangement of the detector in the middle of the header-suction tube results in an optimally short sample running time in the tube system.

VN 116/87plus

It compares oil mist concentration from each side of the header-suction-tube section and responds if there is a difference. This being a sure sign for an overheating damage in the compartment group with the higher opacity. The differential alarm level is carried along with regard to its sensitivity relating to the 10-stage adjustment of the alarm level which is also available for VN 115. For measuring the opacity differential, the sample flows of both header-suction-tube sections are fed to the turbid metric channel one after the other by closing the respective tube sections alternately by means of reed valves.

VN 215/87plus

VISATRON VN215/87plus, operates in the same way as the VN 116/87plus as far as the tripping of an alarm is concerned. However, it is able to additionally indicate the suction point with the highest opacity and thus the compartment in which the overheating damage has occurred. Unlike the other types, the VN 215 series has a single-suction-tube system, each compartment being connected by a separate tube to valve box designed for 10 suction lines. All procedures are similar to those of type VN 116 series. Normally, the compound opacity of the oil mist from all compartments will continuously be measured. If the opacity exceeds the damage check starting threshold a damage check will be executed. lf the differential alarm level is exceeded, an alarm causing the automatic stop of the machine or a speed reduction will immediately be tripped.

The new Schaller Automation Visatron VN2020 Oil Mist Detector

In 2020 Schaller Automation released a new oil mist detector, the Visatron VN2020. Acting as a successor to the VN115 and VN116 lines of models, it improves many aspects of what made the VN115 and VN116 series great. The VN2020 will be especially for 4- stroke engine marked. The VN301plus replaces VN215/87plus for the 2- stoke marked!

How does the Visatron VN2020 work?

Visatron VN2020 continuously and simultaneously evacuate crankcase atmosphere from each crankcase compartment between two main bearings. The VN2020 use a header-suction tube system for this purpose. The oil mist detector is positioned in the middle between two header-suction-tube sections located on the engine sides; from these sections, single-suction tubes branch off near the compartments. These tubes are considerably thinner than the header-suction tubes and they have a throttling effect. We have now made a simple guide on our website for you to follow that will make it easier for you to install this upgrade. Please check it out here!

Our website construction is well underway and starting to take shape. We still have some way to go but feel like this is a great time to hear what you think about the site so that we can meet your standards as well as our own.

In the past months we have been working on a new more streamlined and user-friendly design for our website. This to make it easier for you to find what you require. And new features such as our Part Database are currently being focused on. This page will give you the optimal way to find your Visatron Oil Mist Detector systems specs and parts. Alongside our updated Spare Parts and Service & Maintenance page we think this will be a great method for you to have a complete overview of your systems.

Please contact us at epp@epp.no to let us know what you like and what you would like to see improved!

Recently we started the process of updating our website with a completely new, modern and user-friendly design. This means for the time being that there will be a few inaccuracies in lines of photos and minor information as these aspects are also under developement. There will also be added new features to this site we haven’t been able to offer before, like a Parts Database were you will be able to find specs for all the parts we offer. We will be updating the site several times a day with new information and functions.

We estimate that construction will be complete within September, thank you for your patience.
